Nestled in the hills at the foot of the Atuo Ridge leading to Wuzhi Mountain, Tongza City is noted for its rich Li and Miao nationalities heritage and its spectacular scenery.

Tongza, which in the language of the indigenous Li people means "fertile river valley", has a population of about 98,000 and serves as the areas business and shopping centre. The city is located on the Haiyu Central Trunk Highway linking Haikou and Sanya and also serves as a transportation hub. Famous products of the area include green tea from Wuzhi Mountain, tropical orchids and Li and Miao handicrafts.
