Located near Dongshan Lake just 27 km southwest of Haikou, the 1.3-sq-km Dongshan Lake Animal Zoo is divided into exhibits that are accessible either by foot or by vehicle.

The zoo's total visitor area of about 87 ha contains some 200 species of rare birds and animals and, in addition to viewing exotic creatures at the vehicles-only and the pedestrians-only areas, visitors are invited to interact with the monkeys on the artificial monkey mountain or stroll around the aviary. Dongshan Lake Wild Animal Zoo also includes a lakeside holiday resort area and services centre.
